On January 5, 2023, police arrived at the home of Tulsa, Oklahoma resident April Lyda. They were responding to a stabbing-related incident but soon realized their suspect was April’s 12-year-old daughter.

The 12-year-old had repeatedly stabbed her 9-year-old brother Zander in the chest while he slept downstairs in the family home just before midnight while their mother slept upstairs. April Lyda recounted to law enforcement that she’d found her son in that state and that her daughter had immediately run outside.

The 12-year-old did not hesitate to confess what she had done, after which April called the authorities and attempted to start chest compressions on the young boy. When police arrived, the 12-year-old was sobbing and exclaiming how sorry she was.

To any outside spectator, she appeared to be a remorseful child just realizing the gravity of the situation she had somehow found herself in. As she was escorted out of the family’s home, the sobs of her anguished mother could be heard behind her, followed by screams of anger at the actions of her only daughter.

As the unnamed 12-year-old is handcuffed, April rushes outside to confront her, to which the child apologizes again, saying she has no idea what happened and that…
