In April 2010, authorities arrived at a quiet suburban home in St. Paul, Minnesota. Inside, they discovered the lifeless body of 25-year-old Heidi Firkus lying on her back in the kitchen with blood pooling around her head.

Her husband, Nick Firkus, was beside her, sobbing uncontrollably and nursing a gunshot wound to his leg.

Heidi’s 911 call was frantic. Heidi’s panicked voice could be heard telling the dispatcher that someone was trying to break into their home.

Seconds later, a loud bang echoed over the line, followed by a scream. Just 65 seconds after Heidi’s call ended, Nick used her phone to make another 911 call, reporting that an intruder had shot both him and his wife.

Investigators got to work immediately and began piecing together the events of that fateful morning.

Nick claimed he’d heard someone fiddling with the front door around 6.30 a.m. Grabbing his shotgun, he woke Heidi, and they attempted to flee. But just as they reached the stairs, Nick said, the intruder broke in.

A struggle ensued, and in the chaos, the gun went off twice – once, hitting Heidi in the back as she tried to run, and then grazing Nick’s leg.

But something didn’t add up. There were no signs of forced entry, nothing was…
